In this progress shot what I did was to remove some of the detail in order to work with larger tone shapes. If you have a look at the previous state from yesterday, apart from the shift of the mouth and and chin, the excess detail was another thing that was disrupting the unity of the image. That kind of detail comes sparingly at the end as a garnish on top of the well built and established value planes and shapes. Without those details the face suddenly looks much more solid.
